Yummy Eats!

I couldn't resist sharing some cute pics of my morning breakfast with Miss V the other day. For whatever reason this week she has been on a good eating streak... And that makes for a happy mama!

V has never been picky, but we've had our share of trying dinner times where the witching hour meets V's refusal of anything that isn't pasta. She loves fruits and veggies, but has gone on the odd (I am NOT eating chicken kick, and we eat a lot of chicken). This week it's been all good, all the time, and this mama has not had to play short-order chef at all!

Generally I make us each a morning smoothie/shake, swapping out protein powder in mine for Greek yogurt in hers and adding a few different fruits (she's crazy for mango). Yesterday we shared, including my cup, and she couldn't get enough of the shake, or perhaps it was the moustache she had!

Now that's one happy kid after taking a sip of a kale, blueberry, banana shake!

Recipe (not measured) included: (all organic) blueberries, baby kale, frozen banana, unsweetened original almond milk, and vanilla protein powder.

Yum! Xo

Mama's Weekend Away

Nearly all (ok all) of my posts are about Miss V, because that's what I spend all of my time on. Last weekend I got away for a much needed girls weekend. In fact, the first full weekend away solo since little Miss V arrived! Yikes.

I went along with 4 lovely ladies to Vancouver to shop, drink, eat and do the Sun Run-- my first ever race and 10k. We had such a great time!

don't claim to be a runner, but at least pre V I did run fairly regularly. After... Not so much. I did a few runs to prepare, but nothing crazy. I loved it and had an awesome run finishing at 57:34.

Thanks to my friend Lindsey for getting this group organized and getting me to commit :)

Running and pilates have been two regular fitness activities for me for a long time. Given the name of this blog, a pilates post is surely in order soon!

Happy Easter! A bit late...

Yikes, I started this post a full week ago and am just now sitting down to finish it. Time is moving too fast. My time management skills went out the window this week.

I can't wait until V gets excited about holidays as much as I do. Until then I'll just subject her to countless holiday-themed pajamas/projects/outfits/celebrations, which in actual fact just make my life more chaotic, but I love it all the same!

We spent half of our weekend at home and did an overnight trip out of town to see family and friends, which was the perfect balance. We started the weekend off with brunch with friends, followed up by some bunny sugar cookie baking, and a day with no plans, really. It was fantastic. Funny how your home-body ways come out even more when you have kids.

While out of town we took V to visit a local dairy farm in the town I grew up in, which of course meant take a quick look at the cows and hit the ice cream shop. V more or less demanded her own ice cream cone, which she then proceeded to eat at lightning speed for fear someone would take it away from her. It is so funny to think how independent she is becoming, it feels like she was just a baby.

We did our Easter egg hunt at my Grams' house this year. V's Easter basket (Frozen basket, of course) contained a few fun bunny eggs filled with stickers or gummy candies, some garden tools, a Mrs. Potato Head, and 2 Easter lift-the-flap books. V loves these books, I'm always on the look out for new ones. Hopefully this doesn't lead her to shun regular books ;)

My family has an old, crazy tradition of an annual "Easter Egg Roll" which has been continued for generations. We pay an entry fee, roll eggs down a ramp, and try and knock out everyone else's eggs. Of course it wouldn't be our family if it wasn't ridiculously competitive. I am usually knocked out early on but managed to squeak in with third place this year. V wasn't a fan ... maybe next year she'll be up for the competition.

This is the only family pic I have from Easter weekend, and of course it is blurry. I included it anyways, as I'm attempting to document family life and what would that be with out a picture of all of us now and then.

Although it's a bit belated... Happy Easter!

Baby (Ok, Toddler) Firsts

With a nearly one-and-a-half year old, baby firsts are becoming fleeting moments, rather than the everyday event they once were. Yesterday I took V for her first haircut. They were in her eyes and, for fear that my Grams would put a bowl on V's head a cut a shockingly straight new fringe (a la my childhood), we went to visit my friend Tracy at her salon.
V loved it. The mirrors, the tall chair, she was all smiles, beaming at her reflection the whole time.
have to admit, I wasn't ready for a full trim... It's not quite time to see those baby wings go (not to mention the pigtails i love putting in her hair!) Thankfully the new cut doesn't appear baby mullet-ish. And V looks so very sweet with her fresh new do.

Aloha! Our Family Vacation in Maui, Hawaii

I am still beaming from our recent vacation to Maui, Hawaii. We had the best time. Although it is much more challenging to travel with a monkey toddler on my lap, we had so much fun once we arrived there.

We stayed at the Marriott Maui Ocean Club on Kaanapali beach in Maui. We love loved this place! It had it all: tons of amazing pools; always an open chair in a good spot, no matter the time of day (I hate the "reserving chairs game" that you have to play at most resorts, although I would be really good at it now with my early waking child!); quick 5 min walk into town; mini kitchenette units (I'd say essential for when you have kids); right on the beach; and the list goes on...

V is a total water baby. We could not. keep. her. out. As soon as Mike put her up on the pool deck she'd race right back in, the kid has no fear when it comes to water! So we spent most of our time at one of the pools. She especially loved the pirate ship pool, the perfect water-playground for toddlers! Look at her little hula dance... so. cute.

We had a kitchenette in our suite, but we opted to only use it for breakfast, some lunches and 500 snack-prep times, and always had dinner out. Our fave spot was Sensei Sushi, the best sushi we've ever had. This came recommended to us by a friend, and she gave us the heads up on making resos in advance (a must especially with kids). Get a hold of the tempura fried macadamia nut ice cream roll! Say what? I do have to admit it looks more impressive than it tastes, but either way, this place was a win!

Like I said we mostly stayed at the pool, with a few trips along the boardwalk into town each day. Miss V decided that she was going to own the boardwalk, and my was it hilarious! You can see her strutting her stuff in this pic below... she had everyone sitting along the boardwalk's attention, and if they weren't watching her, she'd go over and get their attention! Too cute. We knew we had a social baby, but we really didn't realize just how social she was until this trip.

V was also full of new words on the trip. Mike had her down at the beach one morning and a guy walked by with two Starbucks cups (also at the resort!) and V pointed at him and said "caw-fee! caw-fee!". Ha! I blame Mike. Just kidding, we all know it's me who has the latte problem--just look at the name of my blog ;) That is some pretty great marketing on Starbuck's part! Her other favorites were "side" (slide) she discovered the slides at both the playground and the water park; "uppppp pease" (her first two words together!), sa-set (sunset, come on, how cute is this Maui-influenced word?). Of course she won't repeat much of this to others, she's not one to perform so her parents can show off her new-found baby talents!

The weather was great, only one morning of rain, which we used to go to the Maui Ocean Center. V loved it! Although she may have been equally impressed with a fish tank in a Doctor's office. It made for a good morning rather than waiting out the rain at the resort.

We really didn't do much besides enjoy the sunshine, pools, and tasty food. Another must have in Hawaii is shaved ice-- and we aren't talking the basic snow cones drizzled with syrup. We went to Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice (at the Hyatt) and they had so many delicious flavours and combos with ice cream too! Unfortunately our visit ended early when V slipped on the bench and smacked her lip. Poor thing.

All in all an amazing family getaway... you treated us well, Maui! We will be back!

Away we go: 5 packing tips for holidays with your toddler

We love to go away somewhere warm each winter, and we are so excited to bring V into the travelling picture. Everyone and their dog will warn you that travelling with kids isn't the same... And they are right, it's not. Sure, it's chaotic, stressful, tiring... But, even more so, (in my opinion) it's rewarding, fulfilling, fun and makes your heart want to leap out of your chest. I say do it!

The key to making everything (or most things) parenting-wise easier seems to be organization and preparedness, or at least for us A type's it is :) Here are my top 5 packing tips for traveling with a toddler.

1. Packing the bag

This is going look seriously O.C.D., but I pack most of V's clothes in Ziploc bags inside our suitcase. I know, crazy, right. Or is it? I did this for our trip to Hawaii last year when V was only 4 months old (read: even tinnier clothes) and it worked out fantastic. Generally she is sharing a bag with one of the two of us, or this trip we packed one big bag for all of us (look at me shedding my over-packing ways!) It helps to keep their stuff manageable, especially once you start going in and out of the suitcase. Again, ignore my craziness, but I did outfits (i.e. dress and diaper covers) in little bags-- which is a huge help (especially for Dads) rather than rummaging through a suitcase trying to find a little matching pair of baby bottoms for a teeny dress! I put things like all the shorts, sleepwear, shoes, etc. in larger Ziplocs. Call me crazy, but this works like a charm! (And it's not entirely wasteful, when I'm unpacking I put all the Ziplocs into one and toss them in one of the baskets in V's room for the next trip).

2. Snacks, snacks, snacks

Anyone with a toddler knows how crucial this is, so I probably don't even need to say it, but snacks are essential. We have this little snack cup pictured below for V that works perfect to mix a bunch of dry snacks in and is less likely to end up all over the car, plane, you... I've tried lot's of different snack contraptions, this cheap Superstore find is the best. For toddler age I'd also recommend bringing a few fruit squeeze pouches. I brought some on our last trip, but didn't have enough. You can now bring liquids over the allowable amount in kids' items (at least between Canada and the US, including sippy cups or bottles full of water). I also have been known to accidentally smash a jar of baby food in the security line, this can't happen with a squeeze pouch!

3. (New) Toys & Entertainment

I'm not suggesting that every car ride needs new and exciting toys, but if you have a day of travel ahead of you, expect your child to get bored. For our most recent trip some things that went over well were a bunch of little toys packed into little Frozen purses. She happened to get two of these purses given to her, so one I filled with a set of 12 wooden animal characters, and the other with a handful of Little People. This goes back to #1 and is easy to keep organized. I've seen kids' travel kit making ideas on Pinterest, but found V is probably too young for this yet.

When we arrived in Maui we rented a baby monitor from a local company and needed to up our $ limit on the total for delivery. So we added in a bin of toddler toys to mix things up when we were there. This is such a great idea. We ended up calling pretty last minute, so I think we got the bottom of the barrel when it came to toys, but V didn't seem to care and I used this opportunity to pack away the toys I brought her mid-week so they would be new again for the ride home. She literally squealed with excitement when her baby made an appearance on the flight home! I totally recommend scouting out the options in your destination and renting those items you don't want to lug along with you.

One more note- we don't tend to buy a lot of souvenirs, but I found a ton of kids "Hawaii-themed" books in the shops there that I've never seen here. Since V loves books this worked out perfectly and is a great addition to her baby library! We also got her this beach house as a Valentines gift and waited until she was just about to lose it on the flight before busting it out. It too was a huge hit!

4. Purse Must Haves

A little collection of things for your purse or diaper bag: Johnson's hand and face wipes (I don't go anywhere without these, particularly after a recent puking-in-the-car incident, which I was entirely unprepared for); Bath and Body Works travel hand sanitizer; Skip Hop Pronto Diaper Change Station; A few bags or Ziploc bags rolled up (you really never know when you will need these). Whatever will make your trips to washrooms etc. more efficient and less chaotic. :)

5. Expectations

Last-- but probably most important-- expectations. This is something we learned on this trip. Let go of them. Our V is a great sleeper, and given we had an evening-ish flight, the fact she was sick (could swing either way), and also exhausted, we figured she'd conk out on the plane ride over. We were very wrong. Granted this was mostly due to her plugged nose and not being able to get herself to sleep because she couldn't breathe, but there were a few moments of pure frustration from either or Mike or I. Like I said to Mike after, had we gone into the flight thinking she'd be awake the entire time, we wouldn't have been so frustrated when our expectations didn't play out as we'd hoped.

On the way home we went into the flight with NO expectations and were pleasantly surprised when she fell fast asleep in my lap after only a few minutes and proceeded to be an amazing traveler the rest of the way home, delays, late-night flights and all.

Happy travels!

Birthday Fun: Isla turns 4 and purple cupcakes

Happy birthday to spunky, funny and adorable Isla-bean!

Isla is my friend Lindsey's youngest daughter, and she just turned 4. She's also V's daycare buddy, and being the youngest of three kids she loves playing the "oldest" role around V. Perhaps more accurately she loves getting the chance to be the boss of anything ;) It has been so wonderful watching this little monkey grow up!

I am not a fantastic baker/decorator by any means, but I do love making cakes, and started doing so for Lindsey's three amigos 6ish years ago. This year with work/life/craziness ensuing, Lindsey's husband Justin and I did a spur-of-the-moment collaboration! He baked up some fabulous cupcakes and I piped way too much buttercream icing on top.

Funny story... I called home and asked Mike to bring our little cupcake tier along (in addition to the new puppy, and the wine I forgot) and he instead grabbed the ginormous wedding cake tier used for weddings on our cruise boat. Lindsey and I laughed while we tried to assemble the smallest version of this 5foot stand, in hopes of it not appearing that we forgot 5 dozen cupcakes. We didn't dare say anything--with puppy in tow Mike looked like he may jump out the window. Any minute.

It didn't matter in the end... It looked just fine and Isla beamed with happiness for the purple cupcakes! Turns out anything cake or purple would have won her little heart over!

I love how you can see Isla's little grin on the canvas in the background of this photo. Happy birthday sweet girl! Xo

Makin' a List: Baby Registry Must Haves

Makin' a List: Baby Registry Must Haves

I know many soon to be Mama's and I love passing on suggested baby items for registries. I loved getting product recommendations when I was pregnant with V. One thing I honestly can't believe is how much baby items change in such a short time....really, what more can we need? For example, we just bought another convertible car seat for when I returned back to work in November, for daycare pick-up/drop-off ease. Only a few short months later and there is a WAY better option on the market (we despise putting in the seat and Britax has come out with a genius new click system). So, these are the items that I found to be most useful when V was a babe.

Gear

Chicco Keyfit 30 Infant Car Seat

Yep, we are those weird parents who become obsessed with some random baby gear item and rave about it to everyone. I didn’t realize how much we loved this bucket seat, until we upgraded to a convertible car seat and discovered my husband’s our strong dislike for the new seat. I’ve learned it’s because we were tainted due to the first seat being so damn good! So user-friendly. Light weight. Smart design.  Can’t say enough good things about this seat! Rated as the #1 infant car seat to install. I have recommended this seat to a few friends and they absolutely love it too.
Originally I was looking at the larger Valco tri-mode stroller, then it just happened that we didn’t have our stroller yet, babe had arrived, and we needed to make a purchase. Right now. At the baby store my husband placed our bucket seat with V into the stroller and started cruising around the store and in my new baby daze (I rarely agree to on the spot purchases, especially for something like THE stroller purchase!) I eagerly agreed. Our bucket seat was a perfect fit and this stroller is so easy to manage. I can still hold my wiggly one year old on one hip and collapse the stroller with my other hand and load it into the trunk. Love. Note- it looks like our exact model is no longer available, so I've linked the closest product on the site.

My Little Snuggabunny Deluxe Bouncer

V wasn't much of a swing kid. Actually, she hated it. Our baby swing saw roughly 15 minutes of use. We got this little seat when she was 2 months old and absolutely loved it. It's by no means fancy, but more than did the trick! I highly recommend this product if your babe isn't crazy about the swing.

Bed, Bath & Body

Grobag Baby Sleep Sack

Sleep Sacks are one of those items that even a few years ago weren't super popular (or at least I'm told). I love this product! Safe for baby to sleep and keeps baby covered, especially if you have a kid that covers every inch of their crib in the night. I specifically listed this brand because I have used another brand only to have their zippers split at least 5 times. At the price they sell for that is ridiculous to me! The Grobag has been amazing and is super cozy.

Aden and Anais Swaddle Blankets

These swaddle blankets are amazing for not only wrapping baby up, but also to drape over car seats etc. They get softer with each wash (which will be many). That plus the length alone sets these apart. Before we used sleep sacks we swaddled V in these (arms out, at her demand). Lot's of adorable patterns to choose from.

Baby Life Extra Strength Zinc Oxide Diaper Ointment

I was super lucky that V didn't have a diaper rash until she was around 9 months old; and, I didn't realize just how lucky I was until she had her first one. It is the absolute worst. I can't say enough good things about this cream from Shopper's Drugmart. It worked like a charm to clear up her rash right away. I keep some on hand and if it looks like some irritation is starting I will use it and it's gone in no time. Plus, it's a Canadian-made product. Win.

Baby Comfynose Nasal Aspirator

This may seem like a weird addition to a baby must have list (especially if you are a first time parent... you want me to do what?), but let me tell you when your tiny babe has their first cold you will thank me. The nasal aspirators you get in the baby swag bags from various stores or the hospital seem just too big for tiny nostrils and didn’t do a thing for V. This has been a saving grace for a few colds.

Aden & Anais Hooded Bath Towel

We had a few different hooded towels and our Aden & Anais one was always the first one I'd reach for. The size is perfect for making the sweetest baby burrito!

Nursery

Prince Lionheart Ultimate Wipes Warmer

We actually never had this until V was almost 6 months old. We always used cloths and would just wet them with warm water. When we temporarily changed houses that became more inconvenient, so I ended up purchasing this warmer. It works perfect to have half filled with disposable wipes and half with facecloths.

Diaper Dekor Plus Diaper Disposal System

This is a really great diaper pail, if you are looking at getting one. A few friends have used other brands and say they don't work as well. What I liked about this one is that you choose when to change the bag-- the refills are one long continuous liner and you tear it off when you need to change it. And for a diaper pail, it doesn't look half bad; the grey/white went perfectly with V's nursery. No diaper pail is glamorous, but this one comes close! You will also want at least one package of the refills on hand.

Crane Cool Mist Humidifier

I was just reminded how handy it is to have a humidifier for the nursery since V just came down with a stuffy nose. I liked how this one fit with my grey/pink/white theme.

Toys & Play

Sophie the Giraffe So Pure Teething Ring- Very Soft Version

We love loved this for our daughter. We, like most new parents, were given nearly the entire suite of Sophie toys, with the exception of this smaller ring version. Despite having every other Sophie imaginable, I went out and bought this with one of our gift cards. It is perfect for little hands to grasp onto, is easy to attach to your stroller, car seat, etc. with a few links, and it has smaller parts for babe to rub on their gums. Side note- V found this around the time she turned 1 and was cutting some of her molars and she fell right back in love with it!

Skip Hop Treetop Activity Gym

Activity Mats are a great first "toy" for babies. There are tons of brands to choose from. We had this Skip Hop one and V seemed to love it. Whatever one you get make sure it is machine washable and easy to remove parts. I've seen some with battery pieces etc. which seem unnecessary and inconvenient to me.

Nursing & Feeding

Bebe Au Lait Nursing Cover

Nursing covers are amazing. I could literally walk around the grocery store and nurse and no one was the wiser. (No really, I did this). I had the Classic Eyelet in Black and I loved it. Hindsight tells me that many of baby related messes with breastfeeding (read: spit up) are white and they showed pretty easily on black. I would still buy the black myself (I pretty much live in black so it blended in with 90% of my wardrobe), but this is something that you may want to consider when choosing a pattern. What I really liked about this particular brand is the patented open neckline that holds the cover away from mom and baby. You can see what's going on, get a proper latch, there is good airflow and the fabric isn't sitting on baby's face.

Bobby Nursing Pillow

There are tons of different nursing pillows to choose from; I purchased this one on a recommendation from another blogger. I loved it! I find that some are almost too much pillow and too structured; the Bobby is a comfortable size, and is significantly less bulky than other brands. Plus the assortment of slip covers to choose from are so sweet. Whatever one you get, just ensure that it has a removable, machine-washable cover. (I am assuming this is standard, but you never know!).

Mamas and Papas Baby Snug

We are probably the only people who didn't have a Bumbo well in advance of baby's arrival (and really, you don't need it right away anyways). We got given this Mama's and Papas version-- the Baby Snug-- as a hand-me-down a few months down the road and it is a really great product. Babies' legs just seem to fit better in this brand (its a little more roomy) and you can remove the coloured insert to use as your baby grows (hello chunky baby thighs!) We have got great use out of this seat.

Avent Classic Bottles

Everyone has their own experience with bottles; I do know that I have recommended these to others who have tried different brands and they said they were the only ones that worked for their babies too. I would suggest getting a pack (2 is fine) of small 4oz bottles, and a pack of 3 or more 9oz bottles. You will also want a few different nipple flows-- newborn (2ish), slow/1 (2-4), and medium/2 (4+). The little 4oz bottles might seem like a waste but I find that we are still using them now that V has small bottles in the afternoon and before bed as she transitions away from bottles.

5 Hospital Bag Must Haves for Mama

I am going to be an Auntie! Eeeeeep! My sister recently announced her pregnancy, she'll be welcoming the next new babe to the family in July 2015. How cute is her announcement? Those slippers! Love.

In honour of her announcement I wanted to post some of my suggested hospital bag items for Mamas. Disclaimer-- this list is pretty bare bones. I was (very) fortunate to have a speedy delivery and a quick stay at the hospital... Which meant that my husband carried around a bunch of bags full of sh#t that was recommended during our prenatal classes, that we didn't end up using. "Why do we have tennis balls? Is there even a microwave to heat up this bean bag thing? Do you actually want to use the hospital microwave?"

Ok. I'll admit I took that list pretty serious. It's the Type A in me.

Anyways, these are some items that I recommend make your short list, regardless of how long you are there for, in no particular order.

1. Footwear. Flip flops. At some point in time you are going to want need to get in the shower and who wouldn't want flip flops. Buy a cheap pair and leave them at the door on your way home. Same goes for slippers, make sure they are easy to slip on/off and make sure they are machine washable, or buy a pair that you can chuck afterwards (hindsight).

https://www.lansinoh.com/products/hpa-Lanolin2. Lanolin. They may give you a small tube (at least at our hospital they did), but you'll want heaps of this stuff anyways. The Lansinoh brand is 100% natural and safe for babies-- I've heard there are some brands you need to wash off before feeding babe. Not. A. Chance. This also doubles as an amazing lip balm, which is another item you'll want in your bag anyways.
3. Clip Down Nursing Cami(s). I didn't have much for nursing wear before the baby came, but I did have a couple of these tanks, and went back for more after V was born. I got mine from Motherhood Maternity and a Pea in the Pod and they were fabulous. I wore them as pajama tops for those long nursing nights for months afterwards too. Note-- plain black is a must, especially for when you reach the point that you are slathering on item #2 like there's no tomorrow (it will leave an oil stain on a light coloured top). Sorry.

http://www.blenderbottle.com/blenderbottle-classic.html4. BlenderBottle Shaker Cup. I'm sure any water bottle could work, but I love love these. They actually started out as one of my must-have items for flying when I was travelling for work all the time. They don't have a little spout for filling, which means it's easy to hit the ice/water machine and fill it up quickly. The hospital cups (here at least) are teeny and you are going to need way more water than that. When V was little I'd have two of these on my nightstand to make it through the night.

5. Clothes. For some odd (?) reason I never donned a hospital gown the entire time we were there. Even if you do wear a hospital gown, you'll need your own clothes for heading home. I recommend bringing an over piece-- something cotton, long sleeve and open in the front. This was perfect for easy access while learning to nurse baby, and provided a nice and quick way to cover up when visitors stopped in. Loose pants-- I bought a few pairs of large comfy draw string yoga pants from Costco and they were perfect! Nursing camis (as per above). And underwear. In much bigger sizes then you are used to wearing.

I know, I said 5.. but I did also bring a mini make-up bag with dry shampoo, bobby pins and elastics, toothbrush and toothpaste, some powder foundation and other odds and ends, so don't forget to pack your toiletry bag!

To my sister, I hope this is helpful. Can't wait for the arrival of my beautiful baby niece or nephew. xoxo

Back to Routine ... Almost

Our Christmas holiday break came to an end this week. After a busy week of family and celebrations we took a few days before work started back to hibernate relax. Usually the start of the New Year brings a welcomed change back to routine, especially after consuming more baking, Bailey's and chocolate than the other 11 months of the year combined.

This year our transition back to routine was a little slower than usual, with winter truly arriving in Kelowna. After a green Christmas, last week we had the most snowfall seen in Kelowna in 78 years and the first Snow Day for schools in 35 years! This made for an interesting commute to work to say the least.

V loved snow day! There is nothing funnier than a baby dressed up like a marshmallow waddling around in the snow, making face-down snow angels here and there as they try to navigate in all their winter gear. My family teases me that when I was little I always screamed "It's tooo tiiiiiiggggght!" when putting on snowsuits. Now having first-hand experience dressing a one year old in too much winter gear, I think my complaints were totally legit ;)

In other news, I'm working on let's call it "enhancing" V's nutrition. Not a New Year's resolution per say, but more so a realization that although we've been blessed with a great eater, she definitely holds out for her "favourites", which are generally those things that don't make the cut when it comes to a healthy balanced diet. The kid would eat bananas, pasta, pickles and cottage cheese for every meal if it was up to her. Don't get me wrong, she can totally still enjoy these foods, but I'm going to try harder to mix in a few alternatives, starting with breakfast.

Our first stop was smoothies. One of my long time University friends feeds her boys "hulk juice"; nothing like a little fake-milkshake paired with a superhero to sneak some spinach into their diets! It seems mamas everywhere are mastering kid approved smoothie recipes.

I started with some recipes I found on a blog I follow, Baby Boy Bakery (written by an amazing and inspiring Mama), which can be found here. We subbed in plain or vanilla greek yogurt, added half an avacado, and V went crazy for it! Success. It turns out my husband Mike also likes our new breakfast go-to, so it's a double win.

Another breakfast food I've made a few times this week (on days when we've been home for the morning) is pancakes. I'm not crazy about boxed mixes, and I've been making the following recipe for years. I don't know the original source to credit and I've made a few tweaks here and there, but honestly V can't get enough of these! I'd like to say her excitement in the pic below is for the pancakes she's eating, but, truth be told, it's a big weekend for football in our house and V has learned to celebrate "touch down" and does so every few minutes. So friggin' cute.

Also, check out the new clip-on high chair in this pic that we bought a few weeks ago-- the Guzzie and Guss Perch, which we are loving so far!

Toddler Approved Pancakes

  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup white flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large banana
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 2 large egg whites
  • 1 large egg w/yolk
  • 2 tsp oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 cup nuts, mini chocolate chips (optional, I don't usually add anything)

I have to admit, I am still learning the basics about blogging, and have been trying to find the time to "learn" the ropes of how having a blog works. I wanted it to look perfect of course, but have now decided that design and perfection can come later, and I really just need to get going on regular content (the whole point of this thing anyways).

Happy Sunday!

Blogging... my New Year's resolution

Starting this blog has been on my to-do list for a while. I love writing and I want a space to document everyday life, and perhaps share advice (I also love exhaustive research to find out the very best product recommendations, especially when it comes to baby gear). I follow a few "mom blogs" and although I don't personally know these mamas, I love reading about their life and hearing about their successes, celebrations, struggles and frustrations. So here it goes. The HARDEST part of starting this blog has been naming it. You know how once you have a name in your head you can't think of anything else? And then that name is taken and you are completely stuck? Well. That's what happened to me. But, for the sake of actually getting this thing going I had to take a plunge and pick a name. Although I realize that it might look like I have no idea how to spell Pilates, this in fact is not an error, but my attempt to merge those things I love most into one blog title... being a mama, pilates, and lattes of course!
